　　New programs and data are 'burnt' onto the disc surface as dips by a strong laser. A weaker laser is passed over the surface and the reflected distortion from the dips forms the data.
　　At present it is difficult to erase the contents and return to a perfectly smooth disc surface. The WORM (Write Once Read Many Times) thchnique overcomes this by writing new or revised data onto unused parts of the disc and making any previons contents inaccessible， thus giving the appearance of resavign programs or data. Since compact discs have a 600 megabyte capacity， it can be a long time before a disc is used up and a new one required.
