介绍（英）	Goya’s unique manner of recording the shimmer of silk, buttons, and buckles creates a compelling portrait of a thoughtful sitter contemplating a print, only a corner of which is visible to us. The inscription on the paper’s reverse reads “Don Sebastián Martínez by his friend Goya 1792.” The portrait was probably painted just before Goya contracted the illness that caused his deafness; during his convalescence, he spent several months in the sitter’s home in Cádiz, a flourishing harbor town linked by trade with England and France. Martínez was a famous collector of books, prints, and paintings; he held the position of chief treasurer of the Finance Committee of Cádiz.
