介绍（英）	Extant documentation leaves some ambiguity about who is who in this composition. Hugo van der Goes is on the right with his artist’s tools. His sitter, fifteenth-century ruler Mary of Burgundy, is likely the young woman, accompanied by her husband, Maximilian of Austria, and their son Philip the Handsome. Koller relied on costumes and scenery to make the imagined encounter convincing, enlivened with details like the begging dog. Historical genre scenes were popular in the nineteenth century, and Van der Goes was a trendy subject, reflecting a new appreciation for Netherlandish art as the origin of the European oil painting tradition. Koller’s admiration is underscored by the poses, which recall the pictorial motif of Luke, patron saint of artists, depicting the Virgin.
