介绍（英）	This view of the late Gothic church of St. Eustache, Paris, built 1532-1632 opposite Les Halles, dates from Cox's first trip to Paris in the summer of 1829. On his second day in the city, Cox badly sprained his ankle while descending stairs in the Palais Royal. Undaunted, he hired a cab which he asked to stop when he found an interesting subject or view and sketched from inside the vehicle. To produce this drawing, the artist must have stationed himself on the corner of Rue Trainée and Rue du Four—the buildings seen here at right at right no longer exist. The church had been ransacked during the French revolution and its west entrance façade been pockmarked by artillary. Cox shows figures emerging from the open door, seated on the steps or moving down the adjacent street. Swiftly applied strokes of red and yellow watercolor at lower right indicate drapery swags hung below signs that identify a shop and restaurant. Visually, the image offers a delightful interplay between architectural structure and light playing across stone (a low angle indicating late afternoon). Details such as protruding gargoyles evoke the church's long history, while the ebb and flow of city life is suggested by the signs and drapery.
