介绍（中）	范德班克是苏荷挂毯制造厂老板的儿子，他就读于戈弗雷·克奈勒（1646-1723）于1711年在大皇后街建立的学院。1720年，他与Louis Chéron（1660–1725）合作，在圣马丁巷开设了一所新学院，开设了男女模特的生活课程，William Hogarth（1697–1764）和Joseph Highmore（1692–1780）也参加了该课程。同年，范德班克开始练习肖像画家，并在那个时候画了这幅自画像。作为一名绘图员和插画家，范德班克展示了他的画作经常缺乏的活力和独创性，本页反映了对鲁本斯和范戴克的佛兰德传统的欣赏。
介绍（英）	The son of the proprietor of the Soho Tapestry Manufactory, Vanderbank attended the academy that Godfrey Kneller (1646–1723) established in Great Queen Street in 1711. In 1720, he partnered with Louis Chéron (1660–1725) to open a new academy in St. Martin’s Lane that held life classes with male and female models and was attended by William Hogarth (1697–1764) and Joseph Highmore (1692–1780). That same year Vanderbank began to practice as a portrait painter and drew this self-portrait around that time. As a draftsman and illustrator Vanderbank demonstrates verve and originality that his paintings often lacki and the present sheet reflects appreciation for the Flemish tradition of Rubens and Van Dyck.
